OEM Custom Cold-Formed Profiles for a New Heavy-Duty Dump Truck Model

Project Overview

A heavy-duty dump truck manufacturer was launching a new truck model with a redesigned body. During load testing, the standard catalog profiles used in the original prototype failed to meet the new load-bearing requirements, and the redesign called for several non-standard cross-sections that no standard product could supply. With the launch date already fixed and no cold-forming capability in-house, the customer needed more than a tube mill — they needed an engineering partner.

They brought the project to Shandong Liangshan Qiangsheng Steel Pipe Co., Ltd.

The Problem

  • Standard catalog profiles could not pass the new model’s load tests
  • Non-standard cross-sections that required custom tooling and forming know-how
  • No in-house design or prototyping capacity at the customer’s plant
  • A fixed launch date that left no room for trial and error

Engineering Collaboration: From Drawing to Approved Sample

Instead of quoting off-the-shelf products, our R&D and design team joined the project at the drawing stage:

  1. Drawing review — we analyzed the customer’s body-structure drawings, identified where standard sections fell short, and proposed section designs that kept strength while simplifying production.
  2. Material guidance — based on the actual load cases, we recommended high-strength grades and wall-thickness combinations that met performance without over-specifying.
  3. Sample approval — a first-article sample was formed and delivered for the customer’s own load testing and approval before serial production began.

This stage was the key difference: the customer validated a physical sample against their own test rig before we produced a single batch in volume.

From Sample to Serial Production

Once the sample was approved, production moved into our 18,800+ m² plant:

  • Dedicated tooling and forming settings locked in from the approved sample
  • First-article inspection on every production run, with dimensions checked against the approved drawing
  • In-line checks during cold forming, plus a final inspection of strength, dimensions, and surface quality before loading

Every batch shipped was traced to the approved sample, so the customer received the same section in shipment one and shipment ten.
